The Trust has been established in terms of the Will of the late John Augustus Ion Agar-Hamilton, who died 16 June 1984, to provide bursaries to assist needy students to attend a school, college, university and/or any other educational institution within the Republic of South Africa.  Such persons shall be of reasonable academic merit, who will mature into useful citizens, of good manners, address and intelligence.

RULES:

  1. Candidates in order to qualify for a bursary from the Trust must conform to the following qualifications:
  • be an English-speaking male South African;for Agar Hamilton Trust Bursary Application Form
  • be under twenty-five (25) years of age on 1 January of the year in which the bursary is taken up.
  • be an active communicant and a recognised member of a church belonging to the Anglican Communion.
  • be of predominantly British descent.
  • be of good character possessing scholastic and academic ability.
  • be in need of financial assistance.
  1. The amount of each bursary shall be fixed by the Trustees, who shall have the power to vary such amounts as they in their discretion may deem fit.
  2. The Trustees shall have the right to award each bursary for such period as is estimated to be required by the applicant to cover the course of study proposed, or they may withhold the bursary for any year.
  3. Successful applicants must forward progress reports to send to the Trustees, no later than the 31st day of August for new applications and the 31st day of December for renewed applications, each and every year. If, in the opinion of the Trustees, such reports are not satisfactory, they shall have the right to withdraw the bursary or bursaries in respect of any such applicant for any period subsequent to the date of such unsatisfactory report.
  4. Payment of the amount of the bursary and the manner in which the instalments are to be paid to the successful applicant shall be at the discretion of the Trustees.
  5. All bursaries granted are at the absolute discretion of the Trustees and in the event of an application being refused or discontinued, no correspondence will be entered into.
  6. In the case of school leavers, applicants will arrange for three confidential testimonials to be sent direct to the Trustees, ie Headmaster/ Housemaster, Anglican Priest and a friend of the family. In the case of those who have completed 1 or more years tertiary study, applicants will arrange for 4 confidential testimonials to be sent direct to the Trustees, ie from an Anglican Priest, a friend of the family and two lecturers personally acquainted with the candidate.
